Vernon Kay has been supported by fans as he shared an "emotional" update online.

The TV presenter, 50, is set to host a special outside broadcast on BBC Radio 2 alongside Jeremy Vine to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day. Thursday (June 6) marks 80 years since allied forces entered France and kickstarted the end of World War Two.

Vernon will be presenting live from the Normandy coast, where he will speak to families of soldiers involved in the invasion which led to the defeat of Nazi Germany.

On Instagram, the former This Morning host shared a photo of himself standing on Gold Beach as he prepared to mark the historic event.

He added the caption: "Swordbeach #dday80 An emotional start to the morning interviewing DDay Veterans for @bbcradio2 tomorrow live from Gold beach."

A second agreed: "You’re going to be amazing on your show tomorrow Vernon. I felt your emotion when you were talking to Gary Davies earlier… You are the best man for the job tomorrow and if you do get a little emotional, so be it. You’re showing true compassion which not many can do. We’re all rooting for you and all the extraordinary veterans."

A third posted: "Vernon, you are absolutely the right person for tomorrow's show. Your emotions are always so real and heartfelt. You had me tearing up when you chatted to Gary earlier! As usual I'll be sneakily listening at work (college) with one earbud in. Thank you for being you."
