'Power of the Dream'

With all apologies to boxers and quarterbacks, WNBA players have more mettle than anyone else in sports. That's the impression you'll get watching this documentary in which basketball greats sacrifice their livelihoods to become full-time activists or risk fines that would take away significant chunks of their measly salaries. The film focuses on members of the Atlanta Dream who stood up against their owner when she criticized the Black Lives Matter movement. I don't recall Tom Brady ever being that bold. Prime Video

  • By JAMES ROBSON - AP Soccer Writer

Kevin De Bruyne has scored and Belgium has got its Euro 2024 campaign up and running with a 2-0 win against Romania in Cologne. The No. 3-ranked team in the world shook off the shock of losing to Slovakia in its opening game, with a dominant performance in front of the Belgium royal family at Cologne Stadium. De Bruyne effectively killed the game off in the 80th after converting direct from Belgium goalkeeper Koen Casteels’ long kick.

Michigan's top court to consider whether to further limit no-parole life sentences

  • By ED WHITE - Associated Press

The Michigan Supreme Court will consider whether to ban automatic life prison sentences for people who were 19 or 20 years old when they were involved in a major crime. The court took a significant step in 2022 when it said mandatory no-parole sentences for 18-year-olds violated the Michigan Constitution’s prohibition on “cruel or unusual” punishment. Now the court will consider whether to extend that principle to people who were 19 or 20. The Supreme Court says it will hear arguments in the months ahead in cases from Wayne and Oakland counties.

Stanley Cup Final notebook: Oilers' Zach Hyman is proving to be one of the best free agent signings

  • By STEPHEN WHYNO - AP Hockey Writer

Zach Hyman has turned into not only one of the Edmonton Oilers' best free agent signings but arguably among the best since the NHL's salary cap era began in 2005. Hyman has scored a playoff-best 16 goals including an important one in Game 6 against the Florida Panthers that helped force a Game 7 on Monday night. Hyman signed a seven-year contract worth $38.5 million in 2021 after the Toronto Maple Leafs were unable to keep him given their cap situation. His $5.5 million annual salary now looks like one of the league's biggest bargains.
